Austin Piano Festival
Kris Pineda
Kris Pineda is known for his dynamic and powerful interpretations of the most difficult pieces in the piano repertoire.

A precocious and musical child, Pineda began violin lessons at the age of 5 but quickly switched to the piano, studying in the Keyboard Development Program at SIU-E with Karen Rogers. His talents were recognized at an early age as he garnered success in piano competitions throughout the nation, and performed as soloist with several orchestras in the St. Louis area including the Alton Symphony, Belleville Philharmonic, University City Symphony, and SIU-E Orchestra.

Originally planning on pursuing a career in the medical field, Pineda received a double undergraduate degree in Biology and Psychology from St. Louis University. However, feeling that his true calling was music performance and instruction, he returned to SIU-E to study piano with Dr. Linda Perry. During this time, Pineda was active not only in piano, but also in many of the instrumental ensembles (including the SIU-E Wind Symphony, Concert Jazz Band, and University Orchestra) in which he played the trombone or euphonium. As a winner of the concerto and aria competition at SIU-E, Kris performed the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 with the SIU-E Orchestra. He graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance in 2007.

Pineda moved to Austin, TX to pursue a Masters and Doctorate in piano, while studying under concert pianist Anton Nel. He is currently Associate Professor at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville.
