About The Austin Piano Festival

Founded in 2013, the Austin Piano Festival is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the musical culture of Austin, Texas and surrounding areas by providing multiple educational opportunities and world class concerts. Beside a yearly concert series, our educational initiative for Texas musicians includes Solo Piano Competition, performance opportunities, master classes, and concerts and lessons with world-class guest artists and teachers.

Matt McLaughlin, President

Matthew McLaughlin pursues a multifaceted career as a performer, collaborative artist, and educator. ​A native of Delaware, McLaughlin began his studies at the age of 8 and was quickly recognized for his precocious abilities.He currently resides in Austin, TX where he is active as a musician and writer. Johan Botes, Director

Dr. Johan Botes is known for his extraordinary versatility as a soloist, collaborative musician, and teacher. ​Dr. Botes holds a D.M.A in Piano Performance from the University of Texas at Austin and a M.M from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. He received another M.M. as well as his B.M. from the University of Pretoria in South Africa. ​He is currently Professor of Piano at The University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Read More...
Michael Schneider, Director

​Mr. Schneider spent two years as adjunct Professor of Piano at Youngstown State University in Ohio, and also as adjunct at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in the fall of 2010. He received his Doctorate of Musical Arts Degree in piano performance at the University of Texas in Austin where he studied with Professor Anton Nel as a recipient of the Joe and Teresa Long Scholarship and William Race Memorial Scholarship. Shearon Horton, Competition Chair and Educational Outreach

​Shearon Horton holds the Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from Peabody College and Masters of Music degree in piano performance from The University of Texas at Austin with further doctoral study at Louisiana State University. She served as director of the New Orleans Piano Institute for ten years, and in 2004 received the Outstanding Teacher Award for the state of Louisiana by Louisiana Music Teachers Association.  She received the Austin District Music Teachers Assn. Outstanding Pre-Collegiate Teaching Award in 1988, 2014 and 2015.
Graham Yates, Marketing Coordinator

Graham Yates holds a BA in piano performance from Trinity Western University in Langley, British Columbia, and a Master of Music with an emphasis in piano accompaniment from Brandon University in Manitoba. Mr. Yates found his element when he learned that even as a pianist he did not have to play all by himself. His performing career is almost exclusively in collaboration with singers, instrumentalists, choirs, chamber groups, pit bands and orchestras. Mr. Yates recently relocated to Austin from British Columbia, Canada where he was the director of two music schools. Read More...
Carlos Quesada, Coordination and Outreach

Originally from Costa Rica, Carlos Quesada started playing piano at the age of 10. He pursued his studies in Switzerland, England and at UT Austin where he obtained his DMA in the class of Gregory Allen. Carlos has performed in Costa Rica in such prestigious venues as The National Theater and The National Auditorium. He has had numerous concerto appearances with the Costa Rica National Orchestra playing a range of repertoire from Beethoven to Prokofiev. Carlos is currently a freelance musician and collaborates with the voice faculty at Texas State University in San Marcos. ​
